How does the bracket attach to the roof?

The bracket does not attach to the roof. It attaches through the roof and fastens to the exterior wall top plate using only Simpson Strong-tie SDS ¼ x 3” fasteners which are included with the bracket. See installation sheet.

How does it seal at the roof?

Use a standard pipe jack flashing.

What size beam and rafters do you use?

Your choice. Check with your local lumberyard or contractor for proper spans. The SK24-B is designed to handle any typical 4X beam. The heavy duty SK-24-HDB is available for 4X or 6X beams.

What type of roofing do you use?

The SK24-B is intended for trellis application or light weight poly-carbonate roof panels. Use the SK-24HDB with composition roofing products, high wind areas, heavy snow loads. For coastal conditions, the heavy duty, hot dipped, galvanized SK-24HD-GALV is recommended.

What about weather blowing through the opening?

The unique design creates a chimney effect, with the air pressure blowing up and out. It provides resistance from rain or inclement weather blowing in and removes pesky barbeque smoke.

What about seismic, wind shear or lateral movement?

The bracket is to be incorporated into a designed system. It is the responsibility of the installer to design and calculate. The SK-24-HD is engineered for seismic and lateral loads. The lighter bracket relies on the outline posts in combination with alternate bracing.

Can you use pressure treated lumber?

Some treated wood may have excess surface chemicals making the wood dangerously corrosive. Accordingly, the product may not be used with pressure treated wood with a greater than .25 pcf. Comply with pressure treated manufacturer guidelines.

What if I don’t know what my wall is made of?

This must be verified. If your home is a Manufactured Home, you MUST be certain there is a double top plate or that the exterior wall will be able to carry the weight of your new patio cover. Verify with your manufacturer or consult with a licensed structural engineer or your local building department.

What if my home is Masonry or CMU block construction?

You must be sure the SkyLift is attached to a bond beam or supporting member and fastened with fasteners used for your wall materials equal to or greater than the Simpson Strong-Tie SDS ¼” x 3” fasteners. Fasteners like Tapcon or Redhead Brands may be appropriate.

Is the flashing included with the SkyLift Hardware?

No. The SkyLift Roof Riser Hardware is sealed at the roof with a standard plumbing vent roof flashing. This flashing is not included but is available where local building materials are sold.

Can I install the SkyLift through a metal roof?

Yes, however, you must be very careful to determined existing conditions under the roof deck, if you make a critical mistake, metal roofing is extremely difficult to repair/match. The plumbing vent roof flashings used for metal roofing are EPDM Flashers and come under various trade names. Choose a flashing with the largest base as possible to cover your access opening.

Can I install SkyLift through a tile roof?

Yes, though a typical tile plumbing vent flashing for tile roofing is a lead flashing. Lead flashings are available through most roofing materials suppliers. In addition to the Lead Flashing, you will need an Oatley Rain Collar (or equal) to seal between the opening of the SkyLift Riser and the Lead Flashing.

Can I place the SkyLift Hardware Risers anywhere on the exterior wall?

You will need to determine the best placement. Do not install SkyLift directly over a window or door unless you are able to determine the existing door or window header to verify these are sized correctly to handle any additional loads.

What size SkyLift do I need?

The SkyLift Roof Riser Hardware comes in standard duty and heavy duty. The Standard Duty is intended for supporting trellises and patio covers using lighter weight coverings like polycarbonate or fiberglass. For projects with heavier composition roofing, heavy timbers, decks, high snow loads or areas of high wind or seismic activity we recommend the SkyLift Heavy Duty Roof Riser Hardware.

The SkyLift in Standard Duty are 18” or 24” tall and sized for a typical 4x beam with a net 3-1/2” opening in the beam saddle.

The SkyLift in Heavy Duty are 18”, 24”, 30” or 36” tall and come with a saddle for 4x beams or 6x beams, the 6x beam saddles measure a net 5-1/2”

How much weight will the SkyLift Hardware hold?

The SkyLift product is capable of supporting weights in excess of 3,800/lbs. However, because you may not be certain what the wall will support we use a more conservative weight of 1,250-1,750/lbs. This is the weight a standard double 2x4 top plate 2x4 wall with studs placed 16” on center will support mid-span between the 16” on center studs.

Can I cut the SkyLift risers to size?

The SkyLift Roof Riser can be cut down for a shorter length. If the Riser is shortened you will need to re-drill the through bolt hole for the saddle attachment and treat/prime/paint the raw cut and drilled metal.

Won’t a fly-over patio cover lift off the roof acting like a wing?

No, the standard duty has been tested for uplift and performed very well in this test. Each bracket comes with Simpson Strong-Tie ¼” x 3” SDS Structural Screws for attachment to the top plate. Regarding the “Wing effect”; the fly-over design using the SkyLift Hardware is acting more like an “AIRFOIL effect” you would see on the back of a car and creating pressure pushing down and venting out through the opening between the roof and patio cover. The testing data is available on the web site under the product info tab, you will need to provide contact information to retrieve this data.

How can I address lateral loads and wind loads?

Consult with a design professional and/or engineer. The SkyLift Roof Riser Hardware is just an attachment method for construction. Shapes and sizes of covers and specific site conditions vary greatly. It is the responsibility of the person building the cover to meet all applicable building codes and engineering requirements to their specific project sizes and materials.

Is there any issue with the cover moving or swaying?

The most significant area of movement in a patio cover laterally is at the base of the post set away from the structure. We have found that engineers address lateral loads by setting the outbound post 36” in the ground and embedded in concrete as a secure and stable method meeting lateral design load requirements.

If ground setting is not possible or you are setting the post on an existing concrete patio or slab, we might suggest using the Perma-Column Products; Sturdi-Wall SWP46 or the SW46, these are for a 4x6 post. There are other sizes available at www.permacolumn.com.

How can I stabilize post set away from the house?

We recommend that the post are buried in the ground 30-36” and impeded in concrete. These should be pressure treated and rated for “ground contact”. There are many products used for attaching post bases to existing concrete patios. Choose the post bases that have the best lateral strength at this connection point.

How do I know where the exterior wall is located from the roof?

Place a level at the gutter or fascia and measure back to the exterior wall, this same measurement off the level (plus siding/sheathing thickness) is where the face of the exterior wall is located when looking at the roof.

Can I purchase SkyLift Hardware from my local Building Materials Supplier?

Is SkyLift Hardware made in the USA?

Yes, SkyLift Hardware is a product designed, tested, and manufactured in the U.S.
